NOSB Recommendations

The National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) was established in 1992, and since then it has made over 600 recommendations regarding organic production practice standards and materials allowed or prohibited for use in the production and processing of organic foods.

The NOSB meets twice per year at a public meeting to discuss the items on its work agenda, vote on proposals, and review substances on the National List of Allowed and Prohibited Substances (National List) that are scheduled to go through the Sunset Review Process. If an NOSB proposal receives a decisive vote (2/3 majority) by Board members in favor of the proposed motion, it becomes a recommendation to the USDA, and is provided to the Secretary through the AMS National Organic Program.

There are three indices that highlight all NOSB recommendations since the Board was established. Each lists the date a recommendation was made, the action associated with the recommendation (rulemaking, guidance, etc.), the status of each action, and any relevant notes.  These living documents are updated on a regular basis.

Questions, comments, or corrections related to the library can be submitted to the NOP via nosb@usda.gov.
