The National Park Service and its partners invite family travelers to take part in its new virtual tour following the life of Harriet Tubman. This new initiative, Travel with Tubman: Let Harriet Tubman Guide You on the Journey of a Lifetime, aims to aid the public in learning more about the woman who saved countless lives in the 19th century.
“It is a humbling experience to trace the footsteps of a hero like Harriet Tubman and reflect on everything she endured and accomplished during her lifetime. Thanks to the collaborative work of the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom and its partners, Travel with Tubman can help visitors forge deeper connections through the power of place,” said Chuck Sams, director, National Park Service. “This trip-planning tool highlights the story of Tubman and her iconic legacy in a new way, bringing to light some of the most significant sites associated with her life.”
The tour spans 13 signification destinations important to both Tubman and to greater American history. Six of these 13 destinations lie in New York, including Smith Opera House, where Tubman fought for suffrage and attended the 1897 convention of the New York State Women Suffrage Association.
Guests will also visit Stephen and Harriet Myers’ House, which served as a shelter on the Underground Railroad, Thompson Memorial AME Zion Church, where Tubman worshipped, and even Tubman’s own house, a seven-acre farm she settled in before the Civil War.
The tour is available online, best viewed through the free National Park Service app. The app can be downloaded through the iOS Apple Store and Google Play Store. Through the app, users can also download and print “The Conductor,” or create their own guide to lead them on a unique trip through these important sites.
