According to law enforcement, distracting driving fatalities are high and because of these numbers, one local high school is focused on reiterating the importance of driving safely.

Tuesday morning Lee County High School students learned the importance and severity of distracted driving. Five stations were set up for students in the front yard of the Lee County High School where students and teachers participated in different stations. Each station showed firsthand all of the dangers and consequences of driving without a seat belt, driving while drunk, and driving while on your phone.

FOX 31 News spoke with Emerson Lundy, the Southwest Georgia Liaison for the Governor's Office of Highway Safety. Lundy was responsible for running the seatbelt simulator station and says that "right now the state of Georgia is in a kind of state emergency. We had more fatalities on the roadway last year than we have had in several years, so we are trying to reiterate the importance of not driving while impaired, putting the phones down, and putting your seat belt on buckle up every trip every time,” says Lundy

To bring the program into perspective, there was a memorial placed in the middle of the field during the program which symbolized all of the Lee County students who lost their lives to distracting driving.

In the future, local officials say they hope to continue doing this program to help inform you about the importance of driving safely.
