What better way to end the week (or start the weekend!) than to bring your toddler through preschool age children to join in on the fun and open play during Preschool Playtime? Whether they're bouncing in the bouncy castle every other week, learning to peddle the tricycles, socializing with new friends, or bopping to age-appropriate tunes, there are plenty of things to keep children entertained and having fun in the full-size gymnasium. Moms, dads, grandparents, relatives and guardians are all welcome to attend. Every week there are different things to do as well as new faces to meet and greet.

This program is offered every Friday, 10:30 AM -12:00 PM. Please contact Northwest Recreation Center to register. The cost is $5 for a five visit pass card (card expires after six months). Summer Basketball

The Austin Parks and Recreation Department will begin registration for our upcoming youth summer basketball league for the following age groups: 6U (5-6 years old), 8U (7-8 years old), 10U (9-10 years old), and 12U (11-12 years old). Divisions are based off participants’ age as of January 1, 2024.

Youth Co-Ed Recreational Basketball is a great opportunity for participants to learn skills, practice teamwork and have fun while being physically active. This co-ed basketball league is structured to be a safe, recreational league aimed at beginner to intermediate players. This is a non-competitive league with volunteer coaches. Weekly practices are scheduled for eight weeks at Northwest Recreation Center. A total of six games will be played in the season at Virginia L. Brown Recreation Center.

A reversible jersey and end of season award are included in the program fees.

Program Information
Ages: 5-12 years old as of January 1, 2024.
Program Time: 1 hour weekday practice with games on Saturdays. *Some age groups may play weeknights, depending upon the league.
Program Dates: Practices start the week of June 10, 2024. 6U/8U games will be played on Saturdays, beginning June 29th. 10U/12U games will be played on weeknights. (Monday through Friday)
NO GAMES WILL BE PLAYED DURING JULY 4TH WEEK.
Fees: $40 (Residents)/$70 (Non-Residents). *$10 late fee applied after May 11, 2024.


**Registration is required and will be available April 21 through May 10. Program space is limited, and registration is first come, first served. A $10 late fee will be applied for registration after May 11, 2024. There must be a minimum of 80% of the maximum participants registered in a division to conduct the league for that age group. Due to safety and fairness to the players, teams will not exceed the maximum number of participants.
**The Austin Parks and Recreation Department is looking for enthusiastic and supportive Volunteer Coaches to make a positive impact on the youth and teens in our community. In order for a team to form, a volunteer coach is needed for the league. If an age group does not have a coach, participants in that age group will be refunded in full. Please contact us if you’re interested in becoming a Volunteer Coach.

Anything but Average
Join Austin Parks and Recreation for a summer that will be anything but average. Things we will discover and explore are “Not your average job,” which is inspired by the TV show Dirty Jobs; “Not your average food,” inspired by the TV show Bizarre Foods; and “Not your average sport,” where we talk about extreme sports such as skydiving, luging, mountain biking, base jumping.

This summer, we'll be creating cool arts and craft projects and playing tons of indoor and outdoor games! With ten theme weeks that span the summer, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Each week there will be activities that fit the theme, with special events, swimming and field trips throughout the summer.

The Totally Cool Totally Art (TCTA) program offers free community-based education classes to teenagers. TCTA promotes a philosophy centered on the benefits of arts education, relationship building and service-learning projects. Rotating throughout the Community Recreation Centers, TCTA develops skills in artistic media including culinary arts, drawing and painting, sculpture, video and special effects.

TEEN SUMMER CAMP | Northwest Recreation Center | Programs | Summer Camp | Teen


Designed specifically for youth participants ages 12-15 years old, Teen Camp is ready for another exciting Summer! For 10 weeks, teen campers will explore Austin while traveling in a City of Austin van to awesome field trips as well as participate in fun games and activities at the recreation center. We’ll dive into topics relevant to teens, where campers will have an opportunity learn about themselves, gain valuable skills for the future, and discover their hidden potential. Teens will have the opportunity to participate in and lead a variety of activities including arts and crafts, games, cooking, outdoor adventures, and swimming at pools on most afternoons. Teen campers will be active throughout the summer!

Jazzercise combines elements of jazz dance, resistance training, Pilates, yoga, kick boxing and more to create truly effective programs for people of every age and fitness level. Increase your muscle tone, flexibility, balance, strength and endurance using easy-to-follow movements. Each 60-minute class follows a perceived exertion curve. Karate will give students a working knowledge of martial arts while building self-confidence, physical condition, and self-discipline. A black GI uniform is required (may be purchased from the instructor or elsewhere). Optional costs include tournaments, equipment, and belt tests.
