Description

Join us on January 15th, 2024, from 9 am to 12 pm, for the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service hosted by World Relief Western Washington. Together, we'll honor Dr. King's legacy of civic engagement and social empowerment at the Paradise Parking Plots Community Garden.

Our programs, dedicated to serving refugees and immigrants in South King County, aim to bolster community food security and sovereignty, champion environmental health, and address the effects of stormwater pollution in our local watershed.

Volunteers are invited to contribute to the enhancement of the site by clearing brush and bramble, placing coffee sacks along the pond, and participating in the restoration of native habitat. Be a part of this meaningful day as we celebrate Dr. King's life and work through collective action.

Save the date and join us for a day of service that makes a lasting impact on our community!

Get Connected Icon Q: How will you raise awareness of - and reflect on - the role of racial and social justice within the volunteer project?
A: To enhance awareness and foster reflection on the role of racial and social justice within our volunteer project, we are going to: 1. Share our mission: During our opening speech, we will share our organizational vision statement, envisioning every refugee and immigrant welcomed by community, rooted in community, and empowered for community. We will elaborate on the inception of Paradise Parking Plots Community Garden, emphasizing our commitment to creating more equitable access for immigrants and communities of color to farming space and culturally-relevant vegetables. Connecting the morning's volunteer tasks with increasing food access for underserved communities will be a key focus. 2. Foster Inclusive Discussions: Create an environment that encourages open discussions about racial and social justice. We'll conclude our welcoming and introduction speech by posing reflection questions for attendees to ponder and discuss throughout the event: • What aspects of MLK’s work made it so powerful and effective? • What equity issues do you observe in your community? • Are there individuals facing systematic or social barriers in your community? 3. Resource Sharing: At our check-in table, we'll also distribute materials and resources from World Relief, emphasizing the focus on racial and social justice within our work.
