Dear Colleagues,

Welcome to the 49th IEEE International Conference on Plasma Science, sponsored by the Plasma Science and Applications Committee (PSAC) of the IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Science Society (NPSS). The conference will be held in a hybrid format - in person with a virtual component.

Applications of plasma technologies continue to expand in both traditional and non-traditional areas such as biomedical research, materials processing, lighting, pulsed power, fusion energy, space propulsion, and environmental protection. The ICOPS 2022 program emphasizes this breadth in its slate of plenary talks, oral presentations, and posters. We accepted more than 500 abstracts from 30 countries, and we welcome those attendees who have traveled near and far to get here and those who will participate virtually!

This year’s conference will be supplemented with a minicourse on Plasmas for Space Propulsion, which should provide a valuable overview of a critical area in plasma science. The topic of the Minicourse is well-matched to the conference’s home in Seattle, Washington – a hub of the aerospace industry!

The seven plenary talks cover a wide range of topics, including low- and high-temperature plasmas, high energy density physics, fusion science, and the cutting edge in computational physics. We are fortunate to have Dr. Thomas M. Antonsen, Jr. (2022 IEEE Marie Sklodowska-Curie Award), Dr. J. Gary Eiden (2022 PSAC Award Recipient), and Dr. John P. Verboncoeur (2022 Birdsall Award Recipient), who will each give their prize talks at ICOPS 2022.

The conference organizers, technical committee, and everyone who helped to bring this conference together welcome you to our meeting, and we hope that you enjoy the conference!
