| | CLOSING DATE: May 5, 2022 After six years of offering a very successful Summer Fellows Program, the Montgomery County Council is launching a full year Fellows Program for students who have completed a master’s degree in public policy or a related field. For this inaugural year, there will be opportunity for three outstanding public policy graduates to work for the County Council as Public Policy Interns beginning August 29, 2022. Fellows will work as part of the Council’s non-partisan central staff team, providing objective analysis of policies to the entire County Council. They will have the opportunity to work directly with other Council staff, Councilmembers, and staff in the Executive Branch and other agencies of County Government. Key elements of the Fellows Program - Each Fellow will join a Council staff team working on a variety of issues such as education, housing, transportation, land use or public safety.
- Fellows will prepare and present analyses at Council and Committee meetings.
- Fellows will also be asked to work on longer-term research projects to be presented to the Council.
- Part of the role will involve becoming an expert on national trends in selected subjects matters and recommending innovative programs and policies for the Council’s consideration.
- Fellows will be provided the opportunity for a rotation in another branch of government or another agency.
- There will be monthly programming to introduce Fellows to those in leadership roles throughout government and the private and non-profits sectors in Montgomery County.
- In the summer, Fellows will join our Summer Fellows for field trips and social events.
The starting salary for this recruitment is $62,000 (non-negotiable). This is a one-year term position with the opportunity to renew for a second year based on performance and the Council’s needs. At the end of the Fellowship, we will work with qualified Fellows to find full time employment in County Government. The start date for this position will be August 29, 2022. About the Public Policy Intern Position The work will require performing analysis of complex policy and fiscal issues for the County Council on one or more policy areas over which it has oversight (e.g., health and human services, public safety, the environment, education etc.). Responsibilities include working as a member of the Council’s analytical team to review legislative and budget programs, issues, and policies and develop recommendations for the Council. Specific analytical assignments for this position vary with the Council's needs and priorities. This position requires exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, analytic ability using different tools and a desire to work as a team. This position requires the ability to attend meetings or perform work at locations outside of the office.
