Timmons Leads South Carolina Delegation in Push to Rename VA Clinic in Greenville After Dana Cornell Darnell

Lance Corporal Darnell was a Navy Cross recipient killed in action during the Vietnam War

Rep. William Timmons (SC-04), along with Representatives Nancy Mace (SC-01), Joe Wilson (SC-02), Jeff Duncan (SC-03), Ralph Norman (SC-05), James Clyburn (SC-06), and Tom Rice (SC-07), introduced legislation to rename the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) outpatient clinic in Greenville, SC after Dana Cornell Darnell of Greenville, who was awarded the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism during the Vietnam War. H.R. 5943 would designate the outpatient clinic of the Department of Veterans Affairs in Greenville as the "Lance Corporal Dana Cornell Darnell Outpatient Clinic".

“A native of Greenville, Lance Corporal Dana Cornell Darnell gave it all on the battlefield to protect his fellow servicemembers during the Vietnam War,” said Rep. William Timmons (SC-04). “Even after being temporarily blinded by enemy fire, he refused to be evacuated and quickly began assisting in the care of the wounded. Renaming the Greenville VA clinic in honor of Lance Corporal Darnell will ensure we never forget the courage, service, and sacrifice of our fellow South Carolinian. I thank each of my colleagues from across the Palmetto State for their support in this effort.”

“Lance Corporal Dana Cornell Darnell exhibited courage, bravery, and heroism during the Vietnam War. His actions were deserving of the Navy Cross and should serve as an example of exceptional fortitude to all those who serve,” said Rep. Nancy Mace (SC-01). “For his heroism, I and my colleagues move to designate the Department of Veterans Affairs outpatient clinic in Greenville, SC to be named the Lance Corporal Dana Cornell Darnell Outpatient Clinic in honor of his service to his country.”

“Lance Corporal Dana Cornell Darnell was a true military hero and designating the outpatient clinic in Greenville with his name is another way of honoring his service to our country,” said Rep. Joe Wilson (SC-02). “I’m grateful to support this effort.”

“Honoring American heroes is something we should do every day, not just on Veterans Day,” said Rep. Jeff Duncan (SC-03). “Lance Corporal Dana Cornell Darnell was an American hero who deserves recognition for his military service and extraordinary valor in the face of danger during the Vietnam War. Lance Corporal Darnell will now be forever honored through the Lance Corporal Dana Cornell Darnell Outpatient Clinic in Greenville, South Carolina. It was an honor to cosponsor legislation to help pay tribute to this American hero and Navy Cross recipient from South Carolina.”

“Lance Corporal Dana Cornell Darnell is an American patriot whose heroism must never be forgotten,” said Rep. Ralph Norman (SC-05). “His selfless actions in Vietnam make South Carolina extraordinarily proud. I applaud my friend and colleague Representative Timmons for working to preserve the legacy of Mr. Darnell.”

“Veterans in every branch of our military have risked their lives to protect the freedoms we enjoy every day. Some of them rendered service that exceeds the call of duty and renaming this facility acknowledges one of those who did,” said Majority Whip James E. Clyburn (SC-06). “One way we repay them for their commitment and dedication is to ensure every servicemember receives the health care they deserve for the rest of their lives. For this reason, it is fitting that the outpatient clinic of the Department of Veterans Affairs in Greenville will now be designated as the ‘Lance Corporal Dana Cornell Darnell Outpatient Clinic,’ in honor of the Navy Cross recipient who gave the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam. I’m proud to join with the S.C. delegation to immortalize LCpl. Darnell’s heroism in this significant way.”

“It’s fitting that we honor Lance Corporal Dana Cornell Darnell with this designation because he is a true American hero,” said Rep. Tom Rice (SC-07). “Even after he was injured on the battlefield and fighting for his own life, he continued to help rescue his fellow Marines in Vietnam. I’m proud to be part of this effort to designate the Greenville VA Outpatient Clinic after Lance Corporal Darnell so generations of veterans to come will know of this South Carolinian’s service and sacrifice to our great nation.”
