This year marks the 10th anniversary of the opening of the Valmont City Park bike park. On this anniversary, the City of Boulder is excited to provide the community with additional outdoor recreational opportunities at the park with the installation of a new bike pump track and skate park, in addition to making improvements to the existing dog park. These new areas and the dog park will “soft open” to the public on Saturday, Sept. 4, with some areas of the park remaining closed while construction activities continue.

  • The bike park, pavilion and green block skate areas remain open.
  • The new 10,000 square foot concrete skate park includes bowls, transition elements and street features.
  • The bike pump track is a 10,000 square foot asphalt track with rollers and berms for all skill levels.

The main parking lot at Valmont City Park will remain closed while construction continues. Visitors driving a vehicle should park at the Airport Road lot or disc golf lot south of Valmont Road. Visitors are strongly encouraged to use alternative transportation modes or use the multi-use path to access the site since parking lot is limited. Please do not park in the surrounding neighborhoods or business parking lots.

Visitors should also exercise caution and stay within designated areas since construction is still ongoing at the park. Please obey all signage and stay out of closed areas. Some areas may close due to the ongoing construction.

“Since the pump track, skate park and dog park areas are mostly complete, we’re excited to let everyone try them out,” said Planning, Design & Community Engagement Manager Jeff Haley. “We know everyone has been anxiously waiting to get in there, so having a ‘soft opening,’ will allow everyone to use the new areas as long as folks are cautious and respectful while we’re finishing up construction.

Construction on the parking lot, storm water garden, and landscaping will continue and construction timelines are dependent upon weather and other factors and are subject to change.

Planning and community outreach for the installation of new skate and bike features at three parks (Valmont City Park, Scott Carpenter, and Howard Heuston) began in late 2019. The new bike and skate features will almost double the amount of skateable space in Boulder and further increase needed outdoor, socially distanced, recreation opportunities in the city for users of all ages and abilities.

Construction for the Skate Park Improvements and Pump Track Project at Valmont City Park was prioritized amidst the pandemic to increase outdoor, socially-distanced recreation opportunities. The project was funded by Development Excise fees, which support growth related to development.

Construction started in May is expected to be completed by the end of this year. The city worked with the community alongside Evergreen Skateparks and Velosolutions on the new skate features and pump track at the park.

The project also included improvements to the existing Scott Carpenter Skate Park, which opened earlier this summer; and construction of a new, smaller skate area at Howard Heuston Park, which is almost complete. The final phase of the project includes installing a few skate features under the main library near the playground before next summer.

Once the total project is complete later this fall, a community celebration will take place. Details will be announced later.
