Job Specifics
Minimum Qualifications Candidates must have been admitted to the New York State Bar and must have had four years of experience in the practice of law subsequent to admission to the Bar.
Preferred Qualifications:
• 5-7 years of experience preferably in a government or nonprofit setting.
• Strong management and interpersonal skills
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment subject to multiple deadlines.
• Excellent oral and communications skills.
• Experience with one or more of the following areas of law: government, tax exempt organizations, intellectual property.
Duties Description The Associate Counsel (AC) will work closely with senior management to chart NSYCA’s future strategic response to an increasing demand for the Agency’s services. The AC will work collaboratively with senior management in the strategic and annual planning efforts. The AC will be engaged in a wide variety of issues and processes in the arts and culture sector in New York State.
Responsibilities as Associate Counsel will include:
• Advising the Executive Director, Council members, and staff, as applicable, on compliance with statutes and regulations governing or impacting the grantmaking and operations of the Agency; reviewing proposed legislation and regulations affecting the Agency and making recommendations; coordinating or reviewing written materials and grant and operations contracts to ensure they contain appropriate protections and safeguards and comply with Agency legal requirements; acting as a liaison with the Executive Chamber counsel’s office in connection with significant legal or legislative matters as well as matters such as the Open Meetings Law or Freedom of Information Law (FOIL).
• Serve as liaison the NYS Attorney General and other agencies as needed.
• Serve as Ethics Officer, working to ensure compliance and perform annual trainings for staff and Council members.
