Rep. Schrier Introduces Legislation to Suspend Gas Tax, Lower Costs for Washingtonians

February 18, 2022

WASHINGTON, DC – Today Congresswoman Kim Schrier, M.D. (WA-08) and several of her House colleagues introduced the Gas Prices Relief Act. The bill would help lower high gas costs for Washington families by temporarily suspending the 18.4 cent federal gas tax until January 1, 2023.

“People in the 8th district and across the country are feeling the pinch at the gas pump and in the grocery store. What’s infuriating is that this is happening at the same time that gas and oil companies are making record profits,” said Rep. Schrier. “A gas tax holiday is one way to get relief to American families right away.”

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and supply chain bottlenecks have hurt our nation’s economy, driving up prices at the gas pump and the grocery store.

Introducing this legislation is just the most recent step Rep. Schrier has taken to combat rising costs for families and businesses. She recently joined the New Democrat Coalition’s Inflation Working Group to come up with policy solutions to lower costs, free up supply chains and fight inflation. Earlier this month, Rep. Schrier voted for the COMPETES Act that included several of her bills that will crack down on international shipping companies making record profits at the expense of American families and bring manufacturing jobs back to the United States.
