The 2022 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree will bring a North Carolina flavor while on display to tourists and onlookers enjoying the holiday season.

Every year, a different national forest is selected to provide a tree to appear on the west lawn of the U.S. Capitol building for the holiday season. The 2022 tree will come from the National Forests in North Carolina.

The 2021 tree came from Six Rivers National Forest in California. In 1998 and in 1974, Fraser Firs from the Pisgah National Forest adorned the Capitol lawn.

The tradition of the tree, often referred to as “The People’s Tree,” began in 1964 when Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives John W. McCormack placed a live Christmas tree on the Capitol lawn.

The state's national forests are comprised of the Uwharrie, Croatan, Nantahala and Pisgah.
