About us
Connecticut Education Network (CEN), the nation’s first all-optical research and education network, delivers reliable, high-speed internet access, data transport, and value added services to its members throughout Connecticut. CEN helps deliver on the promise of equality in education by providing access to technology that schools and libraries would not be able to afford on their own. This investment is supported by private schools and institutions of higher education that are committed to the idea of overall improvement in education and broad support for access to technology. In an effort to remove barriers to technology, CEN supports "Open Access" use of the network, which allows any entity to join the network at a fair price. “Open Access” provides greater access for areas of the state from where it has been prohibitively expensive to obtain high-speed internet access, and could include town-to-town sharing of databases and remote access to municipal applications.

Ryan Kocsondy, Director of the Connecticut Education Network (CEN), spoke at our biweekly SHLB membership call to discuss the CEN Connect program, an ARPA-CPF funded broadband improvement plan to update and expand CAI networking across Connecticut. The program, funded through the US Treasury Department’s Capital Project Fund, aims to enhance the digital equity and inclusion of Connecticut residents by providing high-speed broadband access and services to community anchor institutions (CAIs) and their communities. CEN Connect program consists of three main projects: 1️⃣ A comprehensive upgrade of the CEN backbone network, enabling statewide 400G connectivity to over 670 member organizations, including schools, libraries, municipalities, state agencies, and nonprofits. 2️⃣ A fiber connectivity project, providing fiber optic connections for Municipalities, Libraries, and Charter Schools to attach to the CEN network, increasing their bandwidth and reliability. 3️⃣ A $10M Grant program, supporting the expansion of public WiFi access points and hotspots to communities in need, especially in rural and underserved areas. The program is currently in the planning and design phase, and will start implementation in early 2024. The expected completion date is 8/31/2026.
