Summer Art Camp 2023 Teaching Artist Proposal and Application 



Space One Eleven is offering paid teaching positions to artists with previous teaching experience for its 2023 summer art camps. Summer art camps are for (rising) 2nd through 12th graders and meet for 1 or 2 week sessions from 9am to 3pm, Monday through Friday beginning June 5th and ending July 28th, 2023. Payment for teaching is $750-$875 per week. Each camp is limited to between 10 and 15 students.

For grades 2-5 we are interested in proposals for all art mediums. For grades 6-12 we are especially interested in proposals for clay/ceramics and illustration, but other media will be considered. You may apply to teach more than one camp.


Details about teaching during Space One Eleven's summer camps:

For grades 2-5:

  • Young artists in grades 2-5 use a variety of media to create projects.
  • Artists will teach a variety of 2D and/or 3D projects that coincide with the theme, I’M AN ALABAMA ARTIST, TOO! Projects should be influenced by historical or present-day artists from Alabama. 
  • Summer campers will rotate between three studios each day. Each teaching artist will have 3 groups of students coming to their Space One Eleven studio space each day for 5 days.
  • Each teaching artist may be allotted 1 or 2 high school-age assistants.

For grades 6-12:

  • Young artists in grades 6-12 select from a variety of specialized art camps. 
  • Artists will teach 1 medium for the entire camp. 
  • If you require an assistant, please let us know in your proposal. You may be allotted a college student or other adult assistant.

Facilities and Exhibition

  • All supplies will be provided.
  • An etching press is available for camp projects.
  • For clay, a slab roller, clay extruder, and 12 pottery wheels are available. We have the ability to do a raku fire.
  • Space One Eleven will hold an exhibition of teaching artist and student works on Friday, July 28 from 5:30 to 7pm.
  • Teaching artists assist staff with curating and installing the exhibition during the week of July 24.

Please be sure to include the following information:

  • Indicate the age group you wish to work with (grades 2-5 or grades 6-12)
  • Indicate the medium you wish to teach
  • Provide a brief outline of the proposed class
  • Provide a copy or links to your resume, biography, and samples of your work as an artist


About Space One Eleven 

Space One Eleven is a visual arts organization founded in Birmingham, Alabama in 1986. Space One Eleven’s mission is to provide professional opportunities for artists, create a forum for public understanding of contemporary art, and offer arts education to area youth. 

Camp fees for children are based on a sliding scale. Through the generosity of foundations and private contributors, families may qualify for free or reduced tuition.
