Albert H. Small Normandy InstituteAlbert H. Small Normandy InstituteThe Albert H. Small Normandy Institute will take fifteen student-teacher teams on the learning experience of a lifetime. The Institute is an intensive program to learn about the D-Day Campaign of 1944 and the sacrifices made by young Americans to defeat tyranny.
Members of the Institute will begin studying World War II and the Normandy Campaign in January by reading materials provided by the Institute and participating in online discussions of those materials supervised by Institute staff from The George Washington University. From late June to early July 2023, Institute members will travel to the campus of The George Washington University in Washington, D.C., for a series of lectures and activities to deepen their understanding of the conflict. Finally, the students and teachers will participate in a “staff-ride” (army-speak for a participatory educational tour led by GWU professors) of many of the sites in the Normandy Campaign in France. Each student will present a briefing on some element of the campaign at an appropriate site. (For instance, a student giving a presentation on the Atlantic Wall will speak at one of the surviving German bunkers at Longues-Sur-Mer!! For their capstone project, each team will select a soldier who participated in the Normandy Campaign and gave his or her life in the effort to liberate France, prevent the spread of fascism, and ultimately defeat Nazi Germany. With assistance from the Institute staff, each team will learn about that service member’s life and write a biography of that soldier. The culmination of our Staff Ride will be an opportunity for the student member of each team to present a eulogy for their hometown hero while standing by his graveside in the Normandy American Cemetery at Colleville-Sur-Mer. Note: The applications for 2023 are already closed, so you would need to apply for the 2024 program.

Avenues for Change
The Olga Lengyel Institute for Holocaust Studies and Human Rights
Cultivating Social Responsibility: Lessons from the Holocaust and the Rich Soil of the California’s Central Valley will focus on the social role of resistance in its many forms. Educators will leave the seminar with resources to develop curriculum around the Holocaust and to extend that learning to issues that directly affect the lives of their students. By connecting past to present, knowledge gained from Holocaust studies will lead participants to consider how Japanese Internment, the Armenian Genocide, and the Farmworkers’ movement continue to impact life in central California. Our goal is for students to recognize discrimination’s common threads, including policy that serves to limit or even paralyze the “other.”

Throughout the week, reading and writing activities will allow participants, and later their students, to process information gained from local speakers as we strive to minimize the distance between the concepts of “us” and the “other.” As educators gain tools to help their students recognize discrimination and effect change, education becomes a form of resistance when needed, and an act of advocacy, always.

Ben Franklin Transatlantic Fellowship
U.S. Department of State/ Purdue
The Benjamin Franklin Transatlantic Fellowship (BFTF), a program of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, began in 2006 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of birth of Benjamin Franklin, the legendary American statesman and diplomat, whose career, interests, and studies took him across the Atlantic Ocean, bringing about better understanding between Americans and Europeans.

As a diplomat and a printer, he used the power of diplomacy and the media to increase the exchange of information between Americans and the people of other countries. The Institute guides U.S. and European participants to examine what we need to know about each other to communicate better and to face the many challenges of the 21st century together. The Institute also explores how young people interact with media, both as consumers and producers of information, and how the freedom of expression provides rights and imposes responsibilities on citizens.

Statesmanship in American HistoryGilder Lehrman Statesmanship, or statecraft, is the pursuit of politics at the highest level, beyond the levels of organization, mobilization, planning, and leadership. It comes at rare moments in the life of a nation or a polity, usually at a time of founding or of re-founding. It is highly prized, and we think we know it when we see it. But what, exactly, are its components? What are the qualities that make for statesmanship? Can it be developed, or is it a mysterious something that only a few possess? Who has provided examples of it in the American past? In these turbulent and polarized times, Americans need statecraft more than ever, and, more than ever, we need to know what it is, how it can be recognized, and whether it can be cultivated. From George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Frederick Douglass to the present day, we will consider who our statesmen have been, and what we can pass on to our students as directions for their futures in statecraft.https://www.gilderlehrman.org/programs-and-events/statesmanship-american-historyJuly 16-21, 2023April 1, 2023education@gilderlehrman.org
