Over the years, American identity has expanded to include people of heritages and people with disabilities (PWD). Disability Awareness educates people to better understand and appreciate PWD. It also encourages awareness of the injustices that they are still suffering from. As a result, this knowledge encourages the public to consider how they can contribute to the equality of PWD.

Disability Awareness month falls in October. In some states, the third week of October is Disability History week. With this legislation, schools include disability history in their curriculum. This inclusion recognizes people with disabilities as equal citizens by celebrating their existence and contributions throughout time. However, this teacher’s guide can be applicable for any time of the year when the curriculum allows for integration of cultural awareness.
