Funk Bottoms Wetland Restoration (Weinmann Property Project)

Project size: 135 acre site, 72.3 acres wetland enhancement/restoration

Partners: Division of Wildlife, Western Reserve Land Conservancy

The project site is within the Muddy Fork tributary of the Mohican River. Agricultural fields in this area regularly flood due to the topography of the landscape. These flooding events encourage the runoff of nutrients into the Muddy Fork River whose water eventually flows into the Ohio River. This project aims to reduce nutrient runoff by taking 70-acres of row-crop fields out of production and planting the area with grasses and trees. This will reduce soil erosion and provide a buffer between the fields and the waterways. Further, a 2.3-acre shallow wetland will be built to slow the transport of nutrients into Muddy Fork.
