America Recycles Day

ARD 2021 Image

In celebration of America Recycles Day on November 15, we’re keeping recycling best practices on your radar with online activities, recycling tips,  and a social media contest! We're excited to work with our partner, Discovery Cube Orange County, to promote proper recycling. OC residents that pledge to recycle via OCWR social media earn a chance to win a family annual pass to the Cube.

Discovery Cube Orange County is home to the Organic Waste Lab, an interactive exhibit that demonstrates the magic of composting and recycling organic waste. The exhibit features the red wiggler worm station, a waste decomposition wall, and the interactive World of Organic Waste competition station.

To enter to win a family annual pass to Discovery Cube Orange County,  residents are invited to pledge to recycle on OCWR's Facebook or Instagram pages. To enter, "like" the dedicated contest post and comment with how you will recycle on America Recycles Day and moving forward. One pledge via comment equals one entry. One entry per person, repeat pledges will not be considered. Winner will be chosen at random and will be announced on America Recycles Day, November 15. To enter, follow OCWR on social media @ocwaste.

Recycling and lowering your daily waste can be as easy as one, two, three!

Step 1:  Reduce Reducing the amount of material we use is an easy and important part of lowering our waste output. Before purchasing something new or buying in bulk, consider if it will be used efficiently and/or often. This is especially true with food, now that organic waste is a big part of our recycling stream.
Step 2:  Re-Use If you’re ready to toss out an old item, pause and ask yourself if it’s reusable. Whether repurposing an old dresser or dropping off textiles at a local donation center, keep those usable items out of the landfill. For food waste, consider how you can reduce food waste or give composting a try.
Step 3: Recycle Most plastics, aluminum cans, and unbroken glass containers typically can go into your curbside recycling bin. Edible food can be repurposed by freezing for later use or donating to food pantries or others in need. OC residents can recycle mattresses at no cost and visit a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center near you for proper disposal of paint, e-waste, batteries, and beyond.
