Since 1992, NMLF has helped New Mexico libraries foster lifelong learning and ensure relevance to the communities they serve. We do this by providing grants to libraries to build and maintain their collections, update information access technology, and enhance library programs.

Gila Valley Library – Gila, NM ($4385 to provide STEM-related learning opportunities to Cliff public school students with the purpose of encouraging their scientific exploration and discovery through hands-on projects offered by expert educators.  


2021 ~ Development Grants

Embudo Valley Library – Dixon, NM  ($1,000 to offer eight summer reading program sessions with grab-and-go kits as well as adding new titles for mobile check out to nearby summer camp.)

Los Lunas Public Library, Los Lunas, NM ($1,000 to offer school supplies to families as incentives for the summer reading program.)

Moriarty Community Library, Moriarty, NM ($1,000 to establish a seed library and adding outdoor equipment to the collection to promote health in the community.)


2020 ~ Community Relief Micro-Grant Awards

In 2020, we suspended our Development and STEM grant cycles.  In lieu of our traditional grant cycles, we provided $500 micro-grants to 10 New Mexico Libraries, to provide relief funding to address racial justice and COVID-19 needs in their communities.  

We also partnered with the NM State Library, Explora Science Center, and the NM Department of Cultural Affairs to roll out a statewide virtual Summer Reading Program for 2020.

2020 Community Relief micro-Grant Recipients

Alvarado Elementary School – Albuquerque, NM.

$500 to buy high interest ebooks to the collection so that students will have equitable and immediate access to library materials during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cottonwood Classical Preparatory School – Albuquerque, NM.

$500 to buy professional development titles to the collection for teaching staff on the topics of virtual learning, diversity, media literacy, and pedagogy.

David F. Cargo El Valle de Anton Chico Library – Anton Chico, NM.

$500 to buy nonfiction and fiction books in young adult, youth, and adult areas.

Friends of the Questa Public Library – Questa, NM.

$500 to provide each student at the Alta Vista Elementary/Intermediate school with a grade-appropriate book via a drive-by book giveaway event.

Glenwood Community Library – Glenwood, NM.

$500 to buy books for preschool, elementary, and high school youth and support the growing amount of homeschool families during the pandemic.

Gonzales Community School – Santa Fe, NM.

$500 to fund an author visit during the school’s upcoming celebration of El día de los niños/El día de los libros.

Irene S. Sweetkind Public Library – Cochiti Lake, NM.

$500 to facilitate COVID-safe, home-based community art programming resulting in a mosaic to be installed at the library.

Shuter Library of Angel Fire – Angel Fire, NM.

$500 to buy children’s books to the collection to support young families and increased homeschooling in the community during the pandemic.

Talpa Community Center Library – Talpa, NM.

$500 to purchase and install sanitizing equipment and social distancing barriers for the safety of patrons and staff.

Vista Grande Public Library – Santa Fe, New Mexico.

$500 to broaden youth collections related to the experience and history of First Nations, Hispanic/Latinx, African American, and LGBTQ+ communities as well as issues of immigration and social justice.

2019 ~ STEM Innovation Grant

Alamogordo Public Library, Alamogordo, NM ($4018.90 to provide traveling librarian STEM lessons and take home kits to participating students, and a collection of circulating STEM exploration kits.)

Dixon Elementary School Library – Dixon, NM ($996 to update a largely donation-based collection with the purchase of new titles for students.)

Embudo Valley Library – Dixon, NM ($1,000 to support a collaborative summer reading program delivering literacy-focused performance workshops in libraries throughout Northern New Mexico. Partners include NM Library Foundation, the Santa Fe Opera, NM State Library, and the NM Department of Cultural Affairs.)

Glenwood Community Library – Glenwood, NM ($1,000 to purchase books for preschoolers and tweens in support of the upcoming summer reading theme, “Fairy Tales/Mythology/Fantasy.”)

Bloomfield High School Library – Bloomfield, NM ($956 to purchase current and relevant print titles related to New Mexico History.)

2018 ~ STEM Innovation Grant

Embudo Valley Library and Community Center – Dixon, NM ($4,880 to support weekend STEM sessions focused on computer programming and 3D printing, and support for the Dixon Elementary School Robotics team to participate in the RoboRave International, an annual K-16 robotics competition held in Albuquerque, NM.)

Embudo Valley Library – Dixon, NM ($1,000 to support a collaborative summer reading program, among Northern New Mexico Libraries, the Santa Fe Opera, NM State Library, and the NM Department of Cultural Affairs, in delivering literacy-focused performance workshops in 19 libraries, especially Tribal, throughout Northern New Mexico.)

Glenwood Community Library – Glenwood, NM ($998 to add new titles to the library’s audiobook on CD collection, much in demand by library patrons who often drive long distances on routine business.)

Rio Abajo Community Library– La Joya, NM ($1,000 to provide learning and instruction to support participation by local youth in the Super Computing Challenge.)

Indian Pueblo Cultural Center – Albuquerque, NM ($1,000 to preserve and conserve historic photographs depicting Native life and peoples throughout New Mexico.)

Portales High School Library – Portales, NM ($1,000 to promote intergenerational literacy for families with young children by providing a picture book collection for use by students and faculty, in support of the onsite day care and child development class.)

Pueblo of San Felipe Community Library – Pueblo of San Felipe, NM ($1,000 to improve teen engagement with the library and reading by acquiring graphic novels for circulation.)

Institute of American Indian Arts (AIA) Library – Santa Fe, NM ($4101 for STEM enhancement at IAIA to via library materials and field equipment that will support the research needs of students in an inaugural Desert Ecology course.)

Glenwood Community Library – Glenwood, NM ($1,000 for promotion and funding of the library’s summer reading program with new books and supplies for youth, especially tweens and preschoolers).

Montezuma Elementary School – Albuquerque, NM ($1,000 to provide students in grades 3-5 with a tinker lab to explore STEAM topics.)

Mother Whiteside Memorial Library – Grants, NM ($999 to partner with local early childhood centers to develop and deliver story times for students, and to develop lending kits for families to take home.)

Sunland Park Public Library – Sunland Park, NM ($1000 for an afterschool program to help elementary and middle school students succeed in math, in which high school honors students receive support and training to serve as near-peer mentors for younger students.)

Jemez Springs Public Library – Jemez Spring, NM ($960 to provide access to and training on public library digital resources for local public school staff and students.)

Monte Vista Elementary School Library – Albuquerque, NM ($278 to support in-library, maker programs for girls.)

NM Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf – Albuquerque, NM ($985 to expand the library’s professional development collection for sign language interpreters, and to host virtual book clubs for sign-language interpreters.)

2015 ~ STEM Innovation Grants

Multimedia Library, a division of APS Library Services – Albuquerque Public Schools ($4,848 to establish a Lego Lending Library -class sets of Lego construction kits for APS district librarians to foster an interest in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) in students in the 2nd through 5th grade.)

Truman Middle School – Albuquerque, NM ($1,325 to introduce a collection of 10 circulating STEM-based maker kits. Packed in back packs, these kits include instructional texts as well as necessary materials for coding, robotics, knitting, and other STEM-related hobbies that students could explore at home.)

Gila Valley Library ($1000 to purchase books & related instructional materials to complement the Community Forestry Project.)

Glenwood Community Library ($1000 to support their Large Print Books on Wheels program).

NM Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf ($990 to establish a lending library of professional development resources.)

National Hispanic Cultural Center, Albuquerque, NM ($1,000 to establish a collection of Latino children’s literature representative of the expansive breadth of Hispanic cultures and peoples.)

New Mexico Highlands University, Las Vegas, NM ($1,000 to establish an Oral History Resource Program which will record, transcribe, and archive local oral histories in the Donnelly Library, making these histories available to the community.)

Piedra Vista High School, Farmington, NM ($1,000 to support their No Summit Out of Sight program which helps students make a connection between reading for pleasure and real-life adventure through class assignments, creative exploration of personal ‘everests,’ and a visit by 19 year-old author, Jordan Romero.)

Embudo Valley Library ($5000 to fund staff, library materials and supplies for the Caterpillar Club Early Literacy Program which supports pre­K children and their families in providing a strong foundation for subsequent reading, science, technology, engineering, and math success.)

Rio Rancho Public Library ($4,587 to fund educational kits of electronic manipulatives to be used in local schools, home schools, and the community, making STEM equipment and training available to schools and the community builds upon the public library’s tradition of providing growing communities with the resources needed to learn and do new things.)

1992 – 1996

The New Mexico Library Foundation was founded in 1992 to assist the NM Library Association with fundraising and distribution of resources to support library initiatives around the state.  The initial years were dedicated to organizational development and to raising awareness and resources. NLMF awarded the inaugural grant to David Cargo Public Library, Mora NM in 1997.

The New Mexico Library Foundation is a New Mexico 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation. NMLF supports libraries in New Mexico by allocating funds to libraries of all types and to non-profit organizations that directly benefit libraries.
