The VA was the first healthcare organization in the country to create a program uniquely designed to address a critical social determinant to health – loneliness and isolation. With the Columbus VA as its flagship facility, the Compassionate Contact Corps began March 2020 with three volunteers as a “friendly phone call” program reaching out to isolated veterans. Since its start, the program has grown from its initial cohort of three volunteers to more than 35.

The program received national recognition as one of the winners of the VA's Shark Tank.
