Thank You Volunteers!
National Public Lands Day
The Orange County Environmental Protection Division celebrated National Public Lands Day on September 24. In total, 24 volunteers and staff gathered on a new Green PLACE property near the Econlockhatchee River in east Orange CountyVolunteers removed 300 pounds of invasive plants and 170 linear feet of old fencing. A big thank you to the American Society of Civil Engineers' Environmental & Water Resources Institute for supplying volunteer refreshments and extra hands to help! It was wonderful to work with the University of Central Florida's National Society of Black Engineers and all the individuals who came out to help. Thank you to the volunteers and staff that made this project a resounding success!

I started my internship with the Orange County Environmental Protection Division (EPD) in February with the Development Review Program (DRP). The DRP is a fast-paced team which reviews land developments on an environmental basis, ensuring that projects align with regulations on wetlands and Florida's native wildlife. My first project involved digitizing project documentation (plats, permits and plans) from files dating back to the 1900s, to make them more easily accessible for citizens. I uploaded these documents to the specific folders where data such as Conservation Area Impact Permits (CAIs), EPD project reviews and others are stored. More recently, I began a new project to help keep track of reviews and project statuses. The database containing 4,000 records is currently being transferred to make things more organized and efficient. As I assisted the team in transferring these records, I learned more about how the review process works. Now entering my third year as an Environmental Engineering major at the University of Central Florida, I am able to apply what I learned in my internship to my research and studies. It has been a great experience learning the terminology and processes behind the permitting process, and how these steps at the County level help us conserve and preserve Florida's wetlands and native wildlife. I would like to thank my supervisor Tim Madhanagopal and the rest of the DRP team for this amazing opportunity to work with them and for providing me with valuable knowledge that I will carry with me through my career!
