Overview

Our app, Rotten' Stoppin, will help people keep track of food expiration dates. Many people eat expired foods accidently. This can lead to food borne illness, a disease that gives a person food poisoning leading to nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting. An estimated 48 million Americans contract food borne illness each year. With our app, users will input what food they buy and the app will be able to detect when the food will expire through its algorithms. When the food expires it will send the user a notification to let them know to throw it out!

We were inspired to create this app because we have a hard time keeping track of all the expiration dates of the food in our fridges. Furthermore, the expiration date on packages are very tiny and hard to find. All of us have gotten food poisoning plenty of times because our natural instinct is to eat any food available. To help us keep track of food expiration dates in an efficient way, we came up with the Rottin’ Stoppin. Our app can also prevent food waste because people will know when their food will expire.

Our intended audience is mostly adults because they typically do the grocery shopping. However, it will also be usable for kids because they can sign into their parents account on their own devices as well as senior citizens who may have disabilities and cannot read the small font on food. Rottin’ Stoppin is meant to be used by anyone because it will inform people that they need to eat their food. We chose this population because many people buy food that ends up in the garbage. Rottin Stoppin will cause a huge reduction in food waste.
