CINCINNATI (WKRC) - The holidays can be a tough time if you aren't feeling the holiday cheer that surrounds you.

The team at the Lindner Center of Hope says that, for one type of depression, this can be especially tough.

It's called bipolar depression.

Local 12 talked to Dr. Susan McElroy about it today.

She's part of the team at Lindner conducting a new study to offer people a treatment you may not have heard about.

"It's a mixed amphetamine salt, a medication indicated for ADHD," said Dr. McElroy. "There's a link between bipolar and ADHD, so we are studying this medication in bipolar depression.

A few details on this study:

  1. There is a dearth of treatments for bipolar depression. Many more treatments exist for unipolar depression and bipolar mania.
  2. One small, preliminary study suggests the long-action stimulant Lisdexamfetamine may be effective in individuals with bipolar depression.
  3. We are trying to replicate that study by doing a two-site study (LCOH and Mayo Clinic) of a mixed amphetamine salts preparation versus placebo in individuals who have bipolar depression. Participants may not have manic symptoms or substance abuse, but they may have ADHD. Participants who complete the controlled phase will be given a trial open-label mixed amphetamine salts if they want."

Call the Lindner Center of Hope at (513) 536-0707 for more information on the study.

If you qualify for the study, you will be paid for time and travel.

You can participate regardless of insurance coverage, and there is no cost to you.
