As part of Public Health Week in Michigan, 10 individuals and organizations were honored Wednesday, April 10, with the 2024 Hometown Health Hero and Jean Chabut Health Policy Champion awards for their contributions to protecting and improving the health of Michiganders. Hometown Health Hero awards are presented every spring as part of Michigan Public Health Week, and last week's presentation occurred at the State Capitol. MDHHS is a founding member of a partnership of Michigan organizations that gives out the awards. “Our Hometown Health Hero awards are a way for us to highlight selfless and dedicated champions of public health who are making incredible efforts to improve the lives of Michigan residents,” Director Elizabeth Hertel said. “We celebrate all efforts, no matter how small or large, of health care professionals and advocates who make a positive impact on the well-being of our state.” For a list of the winners: https://lnkd.in/gGMS9CtT

Did you know that many families in Michigan struggle to afford a place to live? Affordable housing means paying no more than 30% of your income on housing costs. But in Michigan, a lot of families, about 12.1%, have to spend more than half of their income just on housing. Between 2013 and 2021, the average price of homes in Michigan shot up by 84%. This big jump makes it even harder for people and families to find housing they can afford in the state. Let's examine the disparities further. Even though Black people are only 14% of Michigan's population, they make up 48% of the homeless individuals. These numbers show how important it is to tackle the bigger problems that lead to unstable housing and homelessness, especially among marginalized communities. Check out the map below to see how severe housing cost burden varies across different counties in Michigan. It's evident that disparities exist, showing why it's important that housing stability remains a top priority in Phase III of the Social Determinants of Health Strategy. Together, let's advocate for policies that promote fair housing practices and work towards building communities where everyone has a safe and stable place to call home. We’re a little over six months past the launch of Family Impact Teams (FIT) in 12 Michigan counties, and the stories about how these teams are helping families are truly inspiring. FIT connects people with family resource specialists in Michigan Department of Health & Human Services who can help them access other direct supports. In its first two months alone, FIT helped more than 500 families. From facilitating crucial resources to fostering meaningful connections, FIT is a testament to what we can achieve when we come together. Here's to many more milestones and assisting many more families through FIT. Read more about our effort and how this program fits into our Keep Kids Safe Action Agenda. https://lnkd.in/gBWrsZMF
