Michigan History Magazine article featuring former State Librarian Harriet Tenney

Readers of the July/August 2022 issue of Michigan History Magazine will learn a great deal about a celebrated figure in the history of the Library of Michigan. Former State Librarian Harriet Tenney is featured in the article "Librarian, Curator, and Leader: The Transformative Harriety Tenney" by Valerie R. Marvin. Serving from 1869-1891, Tenney was a pioneering librarian who's leadership and legacy still reverberates throughout the state library today. She was Michigan's first female state officer and state department head. The Library's collections greatly expanded in size and scoop throughout her tenure. She also developed key partnerships with groups like the Michigan Pioneer Society. That partnership with the Michigan Pioneer Society led to the creation of the Michigan Pioneer and Historical Collections, an anthology of personal and biographical information of the early settlers of Michigan that is still a key tool for historians and researchers today.

A special thanks goes to Valerie Marvin in writing this wonderful article highlighting the history and accomplishments of Harriet Tenney. We are also grateful to the Historical Society of Michigan for making the article available to freely view through their website. Find a link to the article on the Michigan History Magazine section of the Historical Society's website: https://www.hsmichigan.org/
