Livingston County Genealogical Society Day Trip to the Library of Michigan

On August 5th, Library of Michigan staff had a great day hosting Livingston County Genealogical Society members for a day trip to the Library as part the society's 40th anniversary celebration. Activities throughout the day included:

  • Q&A session with State Librarian Randy Riley
  • Tour of the Library's facility (including a behind the scenes look of the Rare Book Room)
  • Formal session on Newspaper Research at the Library of Michigan
  • Research time using the Library of Michigan's collections

We really enjoyed our visit with the Livingston County Genealogical Society and want to encourage other groups throughout the state to consider planning similar trips. Library staff can work with each group to tailor the itinerary of the visit to include:

  • Tour of the Library of Michigan
  • Formal presentations on subjects related to the Library's collections
  • Q&A/Study hall sessions with Library staff on research topics

If you are part of a historical society, genealogy group, or any large organization interested in a research trip to the Library of Michigan, contact us at Librarian@Michigan.gov or 517-335-1477 to schedule a visit.

#HelpLMFind: Underground Newspapers and Zines

Independent and personal expression in the modern world is often conveyed through a variety of digital channels, such as listservs, blogs, and other forms of social media. Before these online platforms became available, individuals or small groups used underground newspapers or zines to showcase their views (often against societal norms) on topics related to culture, politics, sports.

The Barnard Zine Library at Bernard College states: “A zine, short for fanzine or magazine, is a DIY* subculture self-publication, usually made on paper and reproduced with a photocopier or printer. Zine creators are often motivated by a desire to share knowledge or experience with people in marginalized or otherwise less-empowered communities.” Often editions of zines would come in numbers less than 100 due to the “do-it-yourself” publishing methods by their authors, especially if they were handwritten.

Underground newspapers will have a larger distribution level then zines, primarily because they were frequently produced using printing presses or equipment intended for commercial printing. Others were created using mimeograph machines, especially if they were produced by high school students. Several underground newspapers came out of Michigan cities and communities. Examples of more well-known papers include:

  • Ann Arbor Argus
  • Ann Arbor Sun
  • Fifth Estate (Detroit)
  • The Paper (East Lansing)

The Library of Michigan has a small, but important collection of underground newspapers and zines from Michigan. We are always on the lookout for more of these publications as they provide broader insight into our state, its issues and the wider culture of its people. Find more information about donating material to the Library of Michigan by visiting the Make A Gift page on the Library's website: www.Michigan.gov/LibraryGift.
