Prevent Aerial Spraying in Beaver Creek
Robert A.
started this petition to
Tina Kotek, governor of Oregon
We are petitioning
Governor Tina Kotek
to place an
immediate moratorium
on the proposed
aerial spraying of pesticides
containing
known carcinogens
, due to commence on 2nd Sep 2023 over a 3-month period in the
Beaver Creek
area of
Seal Rock, OR
, as it will endanger
homes, farms, and ranches
, and the
Beaver Creek State Natural Area
and
Wetlands Preserve
.
We are also requesting an open dialogue with Tyrol Forfar (who lives in Washington) of HFI Consultants, who submitted this notification, and the landowner Sorn Nymark (who lives in Denmark), to discuss alternatives to aerial spraying on and near this vulnerable community and Oregon State Natural Area, an area designated as "important and protected because of its biological diversity".
Proposed Aerial Spray:
A total of 473 acres on and around S Beaver Creek Rd , S Low Rd , and the Beaver Creek State Natural Area in Seal Rock, OR is scheduled for a 90-day window of aerial application of herbicides between 9/02/23 and 11/30/23 .

Herbicides to be used are:
Listed hazards include:
Stream within 100 feet of area
Seep or spring within 100 feet of area
Domestic water supply within 300 feet of area
Bald Eagle nesting site within half mile of area
Home or other dwelling within 300 feet of helicopter application of pesticide.
There was no mention in the notification summary of how many people, including infants and children, live in this area. Many people source their drinking water from springs and wells likely to be contaminated by this aerial application. In addition, the drift from aerial spraying has been shown to travel up to 6 miles from where it has been applied.
Dangers of "Drift":
This documentary "Drift" details how residents of Gold Beach, OR became sick when herbicides from an aerial spray application leaked onto their local communities and contaminated their drinking water . Watch the film here:

A Recent Study:
A study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute in Feb 2023, measured glyphosate levels in the urine of farmers and other study participants, and determined that high levels of this pesticide were associated with oxidative stress, considered to be a key characteristic of carcinogens , stating that “accumulating evidence supports the role of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of hematologic cancers” , such as lymphoma, myeloma and leukemia.
