In accordance with 23 U.S.C. 151, FHWA has designated alternative fuel corridors to support installation of EV charging, hydrogen, propane, and natural gas fueling infrastructure at strategic locations along major national highways. This supports needed changes in the transportation sector that assists in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improves the mobility of passenger and commercial vehicles that employ these technologies across the United States. The FHWA has updated and redesignated the corridors on an annual basis by soliciting nominations from State and local officials. This recurring process responds to the rapidly evolving state of vehicle technology, increased market adoption, and installation of infrastructure related to the use of alternative fuels.
The designation of Alternative Fuel Corridors has grown in importance because it is now tied to funding provisions under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL). The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), was enacted as the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), (Public Law 117-58) on November 15, 2021. The BIL established the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Formula Program and the Charging and Fueling Infrastructure Discretionary Grant Program, both of which provide eligibility based on Alternative Fuel Corridor designations.
The BIL makes the most transformative investment in EV charging in United States (U.S.) history that will put us on a path to a nationwide network of 500,000 EV chargers that ensures a convenient, reliable, affordable, and equitable charging experience for all users. This national network will:
