More than 7 million Healing PTSD stamps have been sold since its release last year, raising $717,000 to fund research about post-traumatic stress disorder.
The funding is being disbursed to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
“Thanks to the millions of Americans who purchased the Healing PTSD stamp, VA will continue to study, create awareness, educate and develop policies which better the lives of veterans with PTSD,” Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert Wilkie said in a statement last week. “The stamp not only raises awareness about PTSD but will provide funding for needed research and education about trauma and PTSD treatment.”
The Postal Service released the Healing PTSD stamp in December. The goal is to raise both awareness and research funding for post-traumatic stress disorder, which develops in some adults and children who have survived a traumatic event.
The stamp is sold for 65 cents at Post Offices and usps.com. The price includes the First-Class Mail single-piece postage rate plus an amount to fund PTSD research.
The Healing PTSD stamp features a photographic illustration of a green plant sprouting from ground that is covered in fallen leaves — an image intended to symbolize the PTSD healing process.
USPS also offers Breast Cancer Research and Save Vanishing Species semipostal stamps.
