Lt. Gov. Davis visits York to highlight gun violence prevention initiatives
The Pennsylvania lieutenant governor was in York on Wednesday as part of his statewide "Safer Communities" tour and congratulated the city on its efforts to stop gun violence.
"No matter what you look like or where you live, every Pennsylvanian deserves the right to be safe and feel safe," said Lt. Gov. Austin Davis.
Davis called gun violence an epidemic, but said York is starting to turn the battle around.
"I want you to know, you are saving lives in the work you do," he added, which includes a program called Group Violence Intervention, or GVI, in place that reaches out to those involved in group violence.
It also offers them a way out.
"York is doing phenomenal work because there are real folks on the ground trying to address the root problems of gun violence," Davis said.
He said there's more work to be done. The state budget, which has yet to be signed by Gov. Josh Shapiro, contains $40 million for violence intervention and prevention.
"As long as there is one homicide in the city, we need to do more," said York Mayor Michael Helfrich.
York was the second stop on the lieutenant governor's tour.
