Vancouver Police say an increasing number of kids across the country are becoming victims of “sextortion.” Sextortion is a crime that occurs when someone threatens to distribute sensitive materials if you don’t send images of a sexual nature, sexual favors, or money.

According to the 'Stop Sextortion' website, adults need to be aware things are happening in digital communities. “Safety in the digital age is new. Chances are kids feel more comfortable navigating digital communities than adults, without knowing enough to stay safe.”

Kids are given several tips on the website to get help.

  • Take control and stop responding
  • Talk with someone you trust
  • Get help. Text ‘THORN’ to 741741
  • Report sextortion
  • Mention if your age is under 18
  • Save everything
  • Change all of your passwords

Officials say both kids and adults need to learn to recognize the signs and know if you're a target.
