King County Community Attendance Support Team (CAST)

What is the cast?

The Community Attendance Support Team (CAST) is coordinated by the King County Superior Court Becca Program and meets with students and families to identify barriers to school attendance and potential solutions or supports. The CAST is authorized as a “Community Engagement Board” and includes members of community based organizations and school districts who meet specific training requirements and offer a variety of opportunities, supports, and resources to youth and families across King County. For more information, contact us at SchoolReengagement@kingcounty.gov or 206-263-8886.

What to Expect

Referral

Parents or students can make a referral to the CAST for support when a student accumulates unexcused absences from school, and a school district can request a CAST after a truancy petition has been filed. A CAST coordinator will reach out to the student, family, and school (if applicable) to discuss the referral, the CAST program, and other engagement opportunities.

CAST Meetings

Meetings include the student (if age appropriate) and family or supportive adult(s), a representative from the school/district, CAST coordinator, and community CAST member(s) based on the individual needs or requests of the student and family. The team discusses the student’s goals and interests, identify any barriers to school attendance, and make a plan to connect the student and/or family with relevant opportunities, supports, and/or resources.

Follow up

After a meeting, CAST member(s) and/or the school/district representative will continue working with the student and family as needed to support progress toward the student’s goals.
