King County Education Reengagement Team

Who are we?

The King County Superior Court Becca Program provides support to address barriers to attendance by:

  • Facilitating connections between students, families, schools, and the community

  • Partnering with Unleash the Brilliance to provide Education Reengagement Workshops

  • Coordinating Community Attendance Support Team (CAST) meetings

  • Providing training and support to school districts to meet the requirements under the Becca Law to work with students and families to reduce or eliminate unexcused absences from school.

In King County, the Becca Law is utilized as a safety net to prevent school drop-out and promote youth safety. The focus of the Becca Process in King County is on moving forward together with students, families, and schools to improve attendance, rather than a punitive approach. Formal court involvement (hearings in front of a judge) are a last resort. King County has not used detention as a sanction for truancy as a policy for over 8 years.

In King County, the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office and King County Superior Court emphasize “Education Reengagement”, recognizing that simply causing a student to attend school will not prevent school dropout or address barriers to school engagement, and that access to educational opportunities is a matter of equity.
