Hello, I have just started learning the ACPF tool and got stuck. Would someone explain to me or point me to the resources which explain in more detail how to create the field boundaries? I am starting with the parcel shapefile from the county auditor. These data show all the parcels including residential, agricultural, urban, etc.  I exported only parcels assigned as agricultural and overlapping with the watershed boundaries. What should I do next?

Thank you for any help.

Thank you! Unfortunately, I don't have access to the ALU layer so my only options are to use the parcels layer or digitize fields completely from scratch. Do I need to add the isAG field in the attribute table before I use the utilities in the ACPF tool?

Do you have a common land unit layer? It may be better than parcels.

Don’t cut anything out of your layer, just select by location for those that are within your buffered area. Then use the utilities tool in the ACPF toolbox (it’s the last one). ACPF will do the rest for you

Agnes,

Where is the HUC12 that you are analyzing?  Is it in an area that does not have a database that contains the field boundaries as referenced in the following map?

The watershed i work on is located in SW Ohio in Butler County. Portion of the watershed in is Indiana. There are no ACPF data available for this region. I only have parcels for butler county so I will still need to digitize the Indiana portion. I guess I’m confused. What exactly should the fields boundary show? Only agricultural fields? What about woods and residential uses? Should they be also included in this layer?

I think you should have those field boundaries available already for MN. We have been using ACPF on the east coast where the databases are not available. Here is how we have been generating field boundaries, in preferable order:

1) Ask NRCS directly for the CLUs. This has worked for assessment projects that have been contracted by NRCS and have a rep, but not for local/state/private applications. It still requires some manual tweaking.

2) Convert the most recent relative NLCD classes (pasture/hay, cultivated crops, open space) to polygons and manually edit boundaries and isAg class based on recent aerial imagery.

3) Manually digitize boundaries from most recent NAIP or other aerial imagery. The color infrared combo on NAIP is particularly helpful for picking out cultivated crop texture. Google street view is also useful for general “ground truthing” of fields that are adjacent to roads. We have trialed some supervised image classification to speed up the polygon generation process, but found that for HUC-12 sized areas, it’s often just quicker to crank them out manually vs training and trialing the model.

As our agricultural units rarely follow the clean, rectangular shape compared to the midwest, all these methods required boundary editing by the GIS tech. It has taken them on average a full day to generate field boundaries and isAg class for a HUC-12.

Hello,
Yes, I am in Ohio. Two watersheds I work on are:
Beals Run - Indian Creek  (HUC 12 050800020803) and Aukerman Creek (050800020302). If you have field data for these watersheds please let me know.
Thank you,
Agnes
