Bike Walk Savannah receives grant from Georgia organization

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTGS) — Bike Walk Savannah received a $39,554.90 grant from the Governor's Office of Highway Safety, the non-profit announced on Tuesday.

According to Bike Walk, the grant will go towards continuing their work to improve safety for people on the streets of Savannah and Chatham County.

The Governor’s Office of Highway Safety is working with all of our highway safety partners to reverse the increase in traffic deaths we have seen in the United States in the last two years," GOHS Director Allen Poole said. "The goal of this project is to prevent crashes and save lives on our roads.

The organization said this grant will finance Bike Walk Savannah's education programs, safety campaigns, bike lights, and much more.

We are grateful for the support of GOHS as it allows us to continue and expand the programs we’ve been offering, with the goal of improving safety for all people on the streets of Chatham County," BWS Executive Director Caila Brown said. "Many people in Savannah and Chatham County depend on biking and walking for daily transportation.

The grant year for the award is Oct. 1, 2022, to Sept. 30, 2023.

According to Brown, the funds will allow the organization to update the Bike SAV maps to include newly added bike paths and will support their continued efforts to expand the city’s bike-friendly infrastructure.

It helps pay for our education programs for children and adults, as well as bicyclists and drivers," Brown said. "It also helps pay for our encouragement events, including bike rides and monthly walks. And then, it also helps us in providing bike lights for individuals who are in need of that important safety device.
