It’s ok. No one likes exams. We’re here to help you through it, though. The Passive House Institute wants to see that you, as a construction professional, can identify red flags when you get a drawing set, and that you know where and how to seek the correct resources. You’re not expected to memorize formulas or tables. You ARE expected to understand what you need to look up when red flags arise on the construction site, and who to ask for help in modeling potential impacts on the Passive House criteria.

Professionals armed with this knowledge often find that Passive building science guidelines inform decisions made in every other “sustainable” or “green” certification or building code requirement that exists.

Why is taking the exam important?

You just did all that hard work for a week! Why would you not want the badge to prove it?

From marketing yourself and your business to making sure you are listed in the right places for potential customers to see your Passive House expertise, getting the CPHT credential is the natural next step in pursuing the kinds of clients to likely want. It also shows Passive House architects, designers, and consultants that you speak their language – a KEY aspect to growing a project team that has high-performance building science as a goal.

The CPHT professional accreditation empowers members of the construction industry to engage and participate in the integrative and interdisciplinary approach necessary to implement Passive House principles on site, which is absolutely fundamental to the success of a quality build.

Exam Format

First of all, all Emu alumni will be armed with our CPHT Textbook that is provided to every student who signs up for an Online Crew or comes to an in-Person. Throughout your course we will coach you on what items are likely to come up in the exam, ad we will quiz you for comprehension. Our textbook provides each student with recap pages and sample Exam questions as well.

The CPHT Exam is open-book, pass/fail (at 50%).

This is because you’re not expected to memorize formulas or reference tables. You’re expected to understand WHAT you need to look up when red flags arise on the construction site.

The exam is mixed format questions, some multiple choice, some calculations, and some identification. It is structured in three sections, and you have 3 hours to complete them:

  • Passive House Basics
this covers questions about the basics of Passive House requirements
  • Building Envelope
this includes questions about assemblies and the thermal envelope
  • Building Services
this section covers mechanical ventilation, heating, cooling, etc.
