Join the American Planning Association
(APA Houston) and the Urban Land Institute
(ULI Houston) during this year's
National Community Planning Month for a youth engagement workshop
in Houston's Settegast neighborhood at BC Elmore Elementary School in October (date/time TBD).
The workshop is part of ULI Houston's Actions for Health Equity in Settegast, a community planning effort aimed at addressing the legacy of racial discrimination in urban planning and development which impacts health and well-being in Settegast today. The project is funded by ULI's Building Healthy Places Initiative and is connected to a national effort by ULI to embed racial equity in real estate and planning practices.
Participants will support children from the neighborhood in becoming active participants in shaping Settegast’s future in engaging and creative ways on public space, affordable housing, amenities and services, parks/greenspace, transportation, and the public realm.
Sign up here if you're interested in participating and tell us how you would be able to support!
*This workshop will be supported by participants in ULI's UrbanPlan which will work with neighborhood high school students at Kashmere High School on a fictitious community to learn the process of development and then apply their skills to a real-world workshop in Settegast. UrbanPlan is a realistic, engaging exercise in which participants—high school students, university students, or public officials—learn the fundamental forces that affect development in our communities. Participants experience challenging issues, private and public sector roles, complex trade-offs, and fundamental economics in play when proposing realistic land use solutions to vexing growth challenges. Please contact ULI Houston for more information about UrbanPlan.
