Reading Buddies
Since 2020, Hotchkiss School students have offered emerging readers an opportunity to practice their reading skills with a Hotchkiss Reading Buddy who helps them enjoy the exciting journey toward independent reading. 

Hotchkiss volunteers (age 14-19) serve as a reading mentors, demonstrating how to stay calm while reading and how to conquer reading challenges. The buddy will ask questions about the text and encourage a child's reading comprehension.

Emerging readers are generally Kindergarten-age through 3rd grade. If there are younger children who know the alphabet and want some reading practice, they are welcome as well.

Upon completion of this form, Olivia Schulof, the program leader, will pair your emerging reader with a Hotchkiss reading buddy and provide contact info so that you and your child's Hotchkiss buddy can determine a mutually convenient time to meet on the Hotchkiss campus for about 45 minutes a week.  Initial caregiver help in choosing appropriate easy/difficult books to begin the sessions will be appreciated.
