King County Nonprofit Employee Engagement survey launches today

The Employee Engagement Survey, part two of the two-part King County Nonprofit Wage & Benefits Survey, is now live!

The 2023 King County Employee Engagement survey is now underway, and we are calling on nonprofits in the region to encourage their employees to participate in the survey. Nonprofit employees are invited to share their candid thoughts on job satisfaction, workplace environment, supervisory relationships, pay/benefits, and other factors that lead to high staff retention. The survey seeks to provide nonprofits with data that can help improve retention of talented employees and ensure a strong delivery of services.

The survey is open to all part-time and full-time nonprofit employees who work at organizations based in or serving King County, including organizations that do not receive King County funding. The survey takes about 15-20 minutes to complete and is available in 10 languages. Nonprofits with more than five respondents can receive a free aggregated report that provides actionable information specific to their organization, while maintaining survey respondents’ anonymity.

Part two, the Employee Engagement survey, is open starting today, March 15 through June 15, 2023. Part one, the Nonprofit Wage & Benefits survey is open through May 15, 2023.

King County Department of Community and Human Services is committed to addressing inequities in the human services network. Following the survey results in 2022, we will continue to seek further information and work with contracted partners to inform actions to address pay disparities across King County. Nonprofit workers are not paid enough to live in the communities they serve, or make their career path sustainable. This mismatch is a problem we must address head on. Often people leave nonprofit positions for higher wages or access to benefits, leaving nonprofits with continual challenges around recruitment and retention.

This survey is funded through the King County Veterans, Seniors and Human Services Levy (VSHSL) and administered by our partner 501 Commons. The Putting People First initiative first launched in 2021 and is comprised of two surveys: 1. A Wage and Benefits Survey, and 2. An Employee Engagement Survey. Using the results from these surveys, we created a report on employee satisfaction, an online salary database, and a report on employment practices, benefits, salaries below the living wage, and more.

In 2021, 1,178 nonprofit employees from 263 organizations participated in the Employee Engagement survey. We are seeking to increase participation numbers this year and moving forward. It is important that organizations of all sizes and types participate in the survey for the resulting information to be as robust and reliable as possible.
