DAYTON, Ohio (WKEF)-- As 2022 comes to an end many people are setting new goals for themselves in the New Year.

Mental health experts share that people should set realistic goals, and don’t worry too much about them.

Dayton 24/7 Now Clara Faith asked people about their New Year resolutions, and most of them told her they're focusing on self-love.

“I think throwing the mindset of perfectionist out the window is huge because you will never feel accomplishment if you don’t get it perfect every single time,” said Dani Ondreka, dance instructor at MVP Dance Fit in Kettering.

According to the data from the ADAMHS Board, Major Depression Disorder and PTSD are included in the top five patient diagnoses.

“Part of setting realistic goals is not putting a lot of pressure on yourself to allow yourself some grace to adjust your goals as you go,” said Megan Kales, crisis lead at Samaritan Behavior Health. “You know, if you slip up, don't get discouraged and kind of abandon everything.”

Kales advises people to start the New Year with small goals and stop rushing.

“To reset yourself for the New Year, I would say prioritize your mental health, so that takes some time to reflect on what your needs are for your mental health,” Kales said.

For some people they are naming 2023 “New Year, New Me” but Kales explained that’s not a realistic mindset to have going into 2023.

“It doesn't really work that way to be realistic with these realistic goals. We have to remember we're still carrying over everything from the the day before, the year before,” Kales said.

However for some, their goal is to pour themselves into the New Year.

“My number one new year’s goal is to exercise and do things for me again,” Ondreka said.

“I want to take time to unplug from technology and spend time with family and friends.” said Amanda Rupp. “Be with my family more and invest in those who invest in me." said Teri Smith.
