ORANGE COUNTY, CALIFORNIA — Orange County Supervisor Katrina Foley released a statement following today’s Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) Board meeting where the Board received an update on a Coastal Rail Planning Framework and address sand replenishment solutions and infrastructure impacts in Dana Point and San Clemente from coastal erosion.
“Recent railroad stabilization efforts such as ground anchors, sandbags, and rip rap are mere temporary fixes,” said Supervisor Foley. “We need long term solutions. Prioritizing a coastal erosion and rail plan will inform the urgent action we must take to address coastal erosion as a threat to our transportation systems, our economy, our national security, our beaches and our homes. Developing the Coastal Rail Planning Framework is a good start to advancing the much-needed long term solutions to coastal erosion damaging our railroad tracks and beaches.”
The Board received an update on current and future grant funding for studies to explore options for coastal rail infrastructure, sand replenishment and retention, and to work with other key agencies and stakeholders, including Los Angeles – San Diego – San Luis Obispo Rail Corridor Agency (LOSSAN), our city, state and federal partners, as well as scientific experts to create a necessary action plan. Orange County Supervisor Katrina Foley was elected to the Board of Supervisors in 2022 to represent the newly established District 5, which includes the cities of Aliso Viejo, Costa Mesa, Dana Point, a large portion of Irvine, Laguna Beach, Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel, Laguna Woods, Newport Beach, San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano, as well as the unincorporated areas of Coto de Caza, Emerald Bay, Ladera Ranch, Las Flores, Rancho Mission Viejo, Stonecliffe and Wagon Wheel.
