Announcements and Key Topics

On September 3, 2020, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) added the Orange County North Basin site to the Superfund National Priorities List (NPL), or "Superfund list.".

The NPL includes the nation’s most toxic hazardous waste sites. Sites included on the NPL are eligible to receive federal funding for long-term, permanent cleanup.

Public Participation Opportunities

In January and February 2020, EPA conducted in-person interviews with 25 individuals interested in the site, as an initial step in drafting a site Community Involvement Plan (CIP). The goal of the CIP is to encourage and facilitate community engagement throughout the Orange County North Basin site cleanup.

EPA defines the “community” as those individuals and entities who have an interest in or are impacted by the site. EPA also recognizes that other stakeholders, including local, state and federal agencies, may have an interest in the site. The EPA and the community will join in participatory two-way communication by applying the tools described in this plan. The CIP is a “living document,” meaning that EPA can update or revise it over the course of site cleanup to reflect changes in the community.

Community Advisory Group

An EPA Community Advisory Group (CAG) consists of local stakeholders who provide information on their needs and concerns related to a site as well as help advise EPA during the Superfund decision-making process. EPA is in the process of helping the community form the CAG for the Orange County North Basin site.  If you are interested in becoming a CAG member and have not already done so, please contact Carlin Hafiz, the Community Involvement Coordinator, at hafiz.carlin@epa.gov.
