Honoring Black History Month
To accompany Executive Constantine’s proclamation of February 2022 as Black History Month in King County, we are featuring learning resources curated by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH). The ASALH selected the 2022 Black History Month theme, “Black Health and Wellness,” to honor the legacy of Black scholars and medical practitioners of both Western medicine and other traditional ways of knowing throughout the African Diaspora. Continued engagement with our true history is central to understanding our present context and Black History Month is one opportunity to dig deeper into Black histories, Black achievements, and Black futures.
We invite you to visit the Association for the Study of African American Life and History website for more information on this year’s theme. Check out their list of books, websites, and other historical materials to further explore Black Health and Wellness.
Happy learning!

Being a leader means bringing your authentic self and seeing people for who they are. With humility and vulnerability, leaders can be more successful when taking the time to stop and check in. Having conversations that allow for sharing personal stories/experiences as a part of getting the work done can foster a culture that creates a safe space for that to happen. In this video interview, Stacy Brown-Philpot shares her experiences as a leader that serves an inspiration to all. Holding top leadership roles at Google, Nordstrom, HP and TaskRabbit (among others), she shares one of her philosophies: “You can harness the power of the ‘human cloud’ to solve almost any problem — as long as you keep the word ‘human’ in the equation.”
