State Board of Education Votes to Send Teacher Certification Regulations Out for Public Comment
Board also voted to create a Career and Technical Education recognition program, and authorized a Mt. Edgecumbe High School land sale
ANCHORAGE – Thursday the State Board of Education and Early Development voted to send two sets of regulations out for public comment and authorized the Commissioner to move forward with a land sale of property associated with Mt. Edgecumbe High School to the U.S. Coast Guard.
The two sets of regulations are the result of two bills passed during the last legislative session addressing teacher certification. The first set of regulations is part of the implementation of HB 19, and allows for more flexibility in certifying world language teachers for immersion programs. The second set of regulations is part of the implementation of SB 20, and facilitates out of state teacher licensing reciprocity.
The board authorized the Commissioner to negotiate and enter into an agreement to sell approximately 1.56 acres over three parcels of land owned by the Department at Mt. Edgecumbe High School in Sitka to the U.S. Coast Guard for construction of a floating dock and support building for a new Fast Response Cutter. The sale is subject to a Final Best Interest Decision.
The board approved a new Career and Technical Education recognition program to highlight high-quality programs in Alaska.
Felix Myers, a student a Sitka High School, was selected as the student-adviser elect for the remainder of the school year. On July 1, 2023 Myers will begin a one year term through June 30, 2024.
The board appointed Judith Daxootsú Ramos and Amanda Lancaster to the Museum Collections Advisory Committee.
The board amended its meeting dates for its March 2023, adding a meeting day on March 14. The March meeting in-person in Juneau will include both a regular quarterly meeting and Tribal governance training.
The board also approved the Draft Annual Report to the Legislature, approved Dr. Amy Phillips-Chan as Director of the Division of Libraries, Archives and Museums, and approved Laurel Shoop as Special Assistant to the Commissioner. The board also approved the minutes of the September 6-7, 2022 and October 26, 2022 meetings.
The board's next scheduled meeting is a special meeting which will be held virtually on January 25, 2023.
