COMMUNITY NEWS / ANNOUNCEMENTS
July is BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color)
Mental Health Awareness Month
This year’s theme is Strength in Communities, where we will be highlighting alternative mental health supports created by BIPOC and queer and trans BIPOC (QTBIPOC), for BIPOC and QTBIPOC.

Our 2021 toolkit will examine community-developed systems of support created to fill in gaps within traditional systems that may overlook cultural and historical factors that impede BIPOC and QTBIPOC mental health. It will explore three topic areas: community care, self-directed care, and cultural care and why these types of care are valid and valuable choices people can make for their mental health.

  • Community care refers to ways in which communities of color have provided support to each other. This can include things such as mutual aid, peer support, and healing circles.
  • Self-directed care is an innovative practice that emphasizes that people with mental health and substance use conditions, or their representatives if applicable, have decision-making authority over services they receive
  • Cultural care refers to practices that are embedded in cultures that are passed down through generations that naturally provide resiliency and healing.
#HaveTheConversation
Summer Safety Conversations

We often say there isn’t a perfect time to Have the Conversation about body safety. However, summertime is filled with a lot of moments that are close to perfect! Whether it is getting ready to go swimming at the beach, wearing dresses, skirts, or shorts, or traveling on vacation, there are a lot of moments to provide safety reminders to children. Using these moments allows parents and caregivers to have regular conversations, early and often, with their children to talk about safety and reduce the stigma of talking about body safety. COVID 19 Survival Kit Series - Sponsored by NAMI Cape Cod & The Islands

In early 2020, when COVID 19 hit hard, NAMI Cape Cod & the Islands developed an 8-part Survival Tool Kit Series, based on the research of Bruce Perry, renowned child psychiatrist and neuroscientist. The kit was developed as a guide to review, over the fall and winter months, some essential tools to help us deal with stress of the COVID 19 pandemic. These tools apply to those of all ages--children, adolescents, young adults, adults and elders. Each month highlights a new topic and provides tools to help manage this crisis and identify resources such as web videos, articles, discussions and more we have found helpful. In the month of February we are highlighting part 4 of the series which focuses on “Screen Time”. To access the tool kit click website button below.
