DECEMBER IS NATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS MONTH !

NH.jpg

As workforce development professionals, we are all-to familiar with the injustices and inequalities that many of the underserved families we help encounter. Everyday we strive to fight these inequalities by ensuring that they receive the tools needed to achieve their goals and have access to an abundance of resources to guide them in their career path.

December is a time, not only to be with family and receive presents but we can also remember to assist in the fight for human rights. Learning about a new culture or history of a group of people and continuing to treat everyone with kindness is one of the simplest ways to continue the fight for human rights.

“Where, after all, do universal human rights begin? In small places, close to home — so close and so small they they cannot be seen on any maps of the world. Unless these rights have meaning there, they have little meaning anywhere. Without concerted citizen action to uphold them close to home, we shall look in vain for progress in the larger world.”

Unemployment Rate Decreased to 5.7% in MD

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released state jobs and unemployment data today. According to the preliminary survey data, Maryland gained 14,900 jobs and the unemployment rate decreased to 5.7% in October. This is the lowest unemployment rate since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

October was the strongest month of jobs growth this year for the private sector and was the second strongest month for jobs growth in Maryland in 2021. All major private sectors experienced job growth in October, for the first time since September 2020. More than three quarters of jobs lost at the beginning of the pandemic have now been recovered (73% in September, 77% in October). Since the beginning of 2021, Maryland has gained a total of 84,000 jobs.
