Morbid Curiosities: The Exhibit

Now open!

Over the past hundred years, the Neville Public Museum has collected tens of thousands of historic artifacts. Naturally, some of these items have a strange, macabre, or disturbing backstory. Each October our staff leads visitors through our behind-the-scenes collections area by flashlight to share the stories of these unusual artifacts. This year we’ve also created an exhibit featuring some of our favorites. Step inside to satisfy your morbid curiosity.

Dinner Program: Letters from Clara

Thursday, October 20

5:00-7:00 p.m.

Clara Pagel was an inspiring woman who, at the age of 40, set off alone to see the world in 1936. Nearly sixty years later, author Janet Newman discovered letters Clara sent to her friends at the YWCA of Wausau, Wisconsin – letters describing Clara’s adventures in Shanghai, Manila, Italy, Egypt, and on a ship off the coast of Africa. Newman will read from Clara’s letters and describe her own adventure while piecing together Clara’s story.

Join us for our upcoming Dinner Program when we welcome author Janet Newman on Thursday, October 20th, 2022. Get your tickets today!

Meet Your Neville Team!

We are thrilled to welcome our new Exhibitions Manager, Devyn McIlraith! Devyn completed her Anthropology undergraduate degree at the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh, where she majored in Archaeology and minored in Studio Art. From there she went on to UW-Milwaukee for her Masters in Anthropology and a graduate certificate in Museum Studies. While in school she completed multiple internships at the Milwaukee Public Museum, then served as the Collections intern for the Washington County Historical Society. She spent nearly seven years working for the Milwaukee Public Museum before being named Collections Manager at the Wisconsin Museum of Quilt and Fiber Arts, ultimately going on to become their Director of Collections & Education.

Outside of work Devyn can be found analyzing details of a prospective cosplay, hoarding various crafting supplies and hoping they will eventually become useful, reading fantasy novels, baking something, or saying hello to other people’s dogs while on walks.

Calling All Merry Makers!

It's holiday volunteer round-up time! Following the past couple years' virtual and hybrid festivities, we are so excited to start planning our favorite in-person traditions, including Bruce the Spruce and the Children Only Shop, neither of which would be possible without a merry team of volunteers. Have you got extra seasonal spirit to share? Do you speak and sing fluent Spruce? Are you an expert gift-wrapper? Join the fun by filling out an application or emailing Katy for more details today!

Stay safe and stay tuned for updates!
