📚✨ Literacy Leaders on the Road! 🛫🌎 This week, the Literacy Center's Wendy and Marcus attended the 2024 National Skills Coalition Summit in Washington D.C. While there, Marcus was on a panel to discuss Digital Equity at Work in Skills Policy, and he and Wendy later met with Senator Gary Peters and fellow leaders in the effort to upskill Michiganders. Inspired by all they've learned from other national leaders in literacy, Wendy and Marcus have now returned home ready to get to work!

If I could say anything about the National Skills Coalition (NSC), it’s that they excel at advocating for Congressional support and funding for programs that promote skills training, career pathways, industry partnerships, and equitable outcomes for all. Robert Espinoza and his team have created a phenomenal event for Workforce Development enthusiast to learn, network and brainstorm ways to raise awareness on the need for a highly skilled workforce. Aside from the fantastic panel discussions and the fireside chat with US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo, my favorite part of the Skills Summit was the Capitol Hill meetings. I am so grateful for the opportunity to meet with Congressman Norcross, Legislative Representative Nora Ryan from Cory Booker's office, and Legislative Assistant Elizabeth “Lily” Antonowicz, MSW, LSW from Andy Kim's office to discuss the need for increase in supportive services funding and enhanced digital literacy training. A huge thank you to NSC’s Patrick Mortiere for taking us to Capitol Hill and reminding us why the work of the National Skills Coalition matters. As always, thank you to Antonio Rivera, MSW for his steadfast leadership and Gina Tuesta for calming my giddy nerves as we walked to The Hill!

Another favorite thing about the Skills Summit: Catching up with the National Skills Coalition board, past and present. They show up for us in a big way, not just at the big moments like this, but throughout the year as leaders in growing NSC's impact and expanding an inclusive economy. We couldn't have a fraction of the impact without them. A special shout out for their support at this year's event to current board members Girard Melancon, Ph.D., Daniel Bustillo, Alex Camardelle, Ph.D., Alice Pritchard, Sarah Steinberg, Allison Dembeck and board alumni Juan Salgado and Abby Snay.
