What is Cubism?

Cubism refers to art where the items in the artwork look like they are made out of cubes and other geometrical shapes.

Analytical Cubism is the first type of cubism. Most analytical Cubists painted and drew in only one color so that the person who was looking at the painting ignored color but only to the shapes they saw.

After 1912, artists started using a new style called Synthetic Cubism. Painters mixed different shapes. They also used more colors. Cubists during this period did not use just paint. They often pasted objects like newspaper or cloth onto the canvas. This new style of art was called collage.

In collaboration with his friend and fellow artist Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso started the Cubism movement, a new style of modern art that he formed in response to the rapidly changing modern world.

This silly, and fun snowman art project below is an excellent introduction to Cubism and the artist Pablo Picasso. Go monochrome or use lots of color. What will you choose?
