​How to Set Oregon Up for Success in Improving Broadband Access Across the State

The FCC Launched a National Broadband Map that shows addresses across the U.S. and the quality of internet access for each, with information provided by service providers. Knowing where broadband is available (and more importantly, where it is not) is critical to secure funding and improve broadband access for our underserved communities. 

We need everyone’s help to make sure the FCC has the most accurate picture of what we need in Oregon. The following walks through the process to check your address and challenge the data if it shows you have better access than you actually do.  

An accurate broadband map will help identify the communities most in need of funding for high-speed internet projects and will be used by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) to determine how much federal BEAD funding each state receives. We have until only January 13 to update the map.

You Can Help

1. Visit BroadbandMap.FCC.gov and type your address into the 'Search by Address' box in the middle of the map.

2. If the broadband service available at your home or business is incorrect and needs to be corrected, click 'Availability Challenge', fill out the form, and click submit.

3. If there is not a dot on your home or business, drop a pin on the map, click 'Location Challenge', fill out the form with the correct information, and click submit.

4. Encourage everyone you know to follow steps 1 through 3 and ensure the map is correct, so we can advocate for funding and deliver broadband where it needs to go.

The National Broadband Map displays address-specific locations of where internet services are (and are not) available nationwide, as reported by internet service providers. The map allows consumers and other stakeholders to dispute or challenge information shown on the map that they believe is inaccurate. To view the map, visit BroadbandMap.FCC.gov.
  • ​The Fixed Broadband Map shows the fiber, cable, DSL, satellite, or fixed wireless internet services available at each home or small business on the map. When you search for an address and select a location on the map, you can see which providers report offering broadband service at that location, as well as the technologies and maximum advertised download and upload speeds they each offer. 
  • The Mobile Broadband Map shows the provider-reported 3G, 4G, and 5G coverage of each mobile provider for the area displayed. The coverage areas reflect where consumers should be able to connect to the mobile network when outdoors or in a moving vehicle, but not necessarily indoors. The map allows you to compare mobile wireless coverage reported by different mobile providers.

​NOTE: Individual location points appear on the map if you search for a location or zoom in. These points identify buildings or structures – such as a home, apartment building, or small business – where internet services are, or could become, available. Each location is part of a dataset called the Broadband Serviceable Location Fabric. Gray location points represent buildings or structures that are not likely to use mass-market broadband services. 

Improving the map improves Oregon’s chances to get federal broadband funding. Here’s what you can do to help improve the map: Go to BroadbandMap.FCC.gov. Search for your address. If the information about your home or small business is inaccurate, you can file a challenge with the FCC to have the map corrected. An accurate map is extremely important to identify those communities most in need of funding for high-speed broadband.

What are the ways to challenge? 
  • Individual: Challenges to availability data for a single location. These will be accepted directly through the map interface.
  • Bulk: Challenges to availability data for multiple locations. These will be filed directly into the Broadband Data Collection system and must meet the format of the applicable data specification.
​What are the types of challenges?
Visit BroadbandMap.FCC.gov and search for your address. If you see inaccurate information, you can help the FCC improve the map by submitting a challenge, or request for corrections:
  • Availability Challenges: If the information about the internet services available at your home or other location is incorrect, you can dispute it by clicking on the Availability Challenge link on the right side of the map and submitting the form.   • Mobile Challenges: If the map of mobile coverage submitted by your provider seems incorrect, you can dispute that by taking speed tests on your mobile phone with the FCC Speed Test App, available for both Android and iOS. Make sure to select the Challenge Speed Test option and to take the test while either outdoors or in a vehicle. Click here to learn how to submit a Mobile Challenge.
  • Location Challenges: If the information about the location point of your home or other location seems to be incorrect, you can submit a Location Challenge to correct the information on the location. The link to do this is to the right of the address on the map. To add a location, click on the place on the map where the location should be and then click the “Challenge Location” button.   • January 13, 2023: Deadline to submit challenges to the FCC’s preliminary National Broadband Map.​
